Holiday Truck Ornament for Kids; Step by Step Process

With Christmas around the corner, start your planning for making this cute ornament with your littles! This will make a great gift and something you’ll want to keep forever.

Here is the best way to complete the project in steps:

Stage One:

  1. Take a picture of your “driver” and any backset passengers. You can also do one truck per child.

For babies or small toddlers, I suggest finding a picture you already have, because wrestling them for the right photo is near impossible.🙃

*If you want to skip the next step, take the picture against a blank slate.

2. OPTIONAL: Head to Canva.com. Start a new project under the size “Instagram Post.” Lay a background of your liking and upload your images. Remove background from the picture of your child. Place images of kids where you desire. Having two separate pictures gives you more freedom later on in the project. Download your images.

3. Upload the pictures to get them printed. I suggest Walgreens Photo, or any quick one hour photo place.

4. While waiting for your prints, start collecting your supplies: Hot glue gun, popsicle sticks, red paint, (or red popsicle sticks,) black paper, black sharpie, green paint, white poster board or card-stock, string, scissors, something to use as Christmas topper (puffball, sticker, bead, etc.) and optional Air Dry Clay w\ black paint.

*If you don’t want a free standing ornament, you can paste your truck against a canvas, card-stock, or white poster board.

If you are painting popsicle sticks red and using Air Dry Clay for the tires, start this process. This is a great time to get your kids involved if they are old enough!

Roll your clay into small balls to flatten out. Should be the size of a penny when flat. Wait a couple hours before painting black.

Stage Two:

5. Start collecting your green handprints for each child. Create a green handprint for every Truck Ornament you are making. If you have a younger child, you may need backup for this part.

Stage Three:

6. After you have picked up your pictures, start laying down your popsicle sticks to play around with how you want your truck to look.

When you find the look you are going for, begin the gluing process. If you have older kids, you can get them involved in this step with close monitoring.

7. Once your truck is complete, add your handprints, tires, steering-wheel, Christmas topper, and string.

Label with Childs name and the year.

Depending on how many you are making this process could be spread out over a few days, or completed all in one day.

You can also make variations of this project:

This Holiday Truck Ornament is a great gift to grandparents, teachers, or a keepsake for you to display on your Christmas tree each year! A child’s handprint is such a wonderful thing to encapsulate.
